Bad Brushing Habits That Harm Your Teeth
It is no secret how important brushing is. It fights off cavities, prevents bad breath, and helps you develop good oral hygiene. But what if your brushing habits are actually doing your teeth more harm than good? Turns out, there are plenty of mistakes we do every day when we clean up our pearly whites.
You Brush Too Long
That, or you do not brush long enough. Brushing is not a timed activity, but it is crucial to spend just the right amount of time. Along with other prosthodontists, we recommend brushing not longer than three minutes, but not shorter than two.
You Brush Too Hard
You run the risk of enamel chipping and breakage if you brush too hard. Hard sideways brushing can cause notches near the gum line called abfraction lesions and can be traumatic for sensitive gums, causing irritation and recession. Unclench your fingers and brush more gently.
You Brush the Wrong Way
Hygienists advise holding the brush so the bristles are at a 45-degree angle to the surface of the teeth. Brush in small circles. Go around from one side to the other, top and bottom, front and back. Brush in small circles or straight lines. Do not forget the gum line to clear off loosened plaque.
You are Using the Wrong Brush (And Toothpaste)
Go for ultra-soft bristled brush to minimize damage, as even the softest can cause abrasions if used too hard. Rinsing your brush from warm water helps keep it bacteria clean. Some toothpaste varieties are too abrasive and hard on enamel. Consult your dentist for professional advice on the right toothpaste for you.
You Do Not Rinse After
Effective brushing does not end with proper brushing technique, toothbrush hold and choice of bristles and toothpaste. Remember to rinse well after to make sure that no toothpaste suds and bacteria remain in your teeth, gums and tongue.
