Broken Tooth Repair – How A Manchester Dentist Can Help

So you’ve been chewing on something hard when suddenly you realise that you’ve broken off a piece of tooth. Now you need broken tooth repair. You phone the dentist and luckily they’ve agreed to take a look today, but as you put the phone down, it suddenly dawns on you that you aren’t entirely sure what it is that they’ll actually do. So with this in mind, let’s take a closer look…

You might be surprised to learn that there isn’t one specific treatment for a broken tooth. In fact treatment varies depending upon how severely your tooth is damaged. For example, your dentist  is highly unlikely to extract the tooth and replace it with dental implants Manchester if there’s every chance it can be saved. Likewise, they probably won’t try to repair it if the tooth has been badly damaged. That said any dentist worth their salt will always do what’s best for the patient, and if you happen to be a nervous patient and require  before removing the tooth, then your dentist will be happy to oblige.

Dental bonding or filling

This is usually the first course of action for a tooth that has been slightly chipped. If for example a small piece has been chipped off the tooth enamel, but not enough to damage the tooth it might be repaired using a simple white filling. Conversely, if the chip is at the front of the mouth and can be seen when you smile, then your dentist might use tooth coloured resin, known as composite bonding, to hide the chipped area.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers do the same job as composite bonding in that they cover the surface of the tooth to hide the crack or chip, with the difference being that they are custom made and last longer. However it’s also a more expensive procedure too. In this process, a thin porcelain shell (the veneer) is secured onto the front surface of the affected tooth effectively concealing the damage to give a seamless smile.

Dental crown or cap

If a larger piece of the tooth has broken off, then a dental crown, otherwise known as a cap, is usually the best option. In this procedure the dentist will usually file down and shape the broken tooth before fitting a protective porcelain crown to cover it. This type of procedure is usually the chosen course of action for where the damage is more severe.

Root Canal

There may well be occasions when a break or chip is large enough to expose the tooth pulp. This is the centre of the tooth containing all the blood vessels and nerves. The problem is that natural bacteria contained within the mouth can easily enter the exposed pulp and infect it and this can cause considerable pain. When this happens the infected tooth pulp needs to be removed, the tooth cleaned out, and then sealed in a process known as a root canal. Surprisingly this procedure is no more painful than a normal filling, but more often than not, it does mean that eventually (usually after several years) the tooth will need to be removed.

Dental Implants

Finally, if the tooth is so badly damaged that it can’t be repaired using any other means, the dentist may suggest a surgical procedure known as a dental implant. Dental implants Manchester are made from titanium and are secured directly into the jaw bone. What happens is that over time the bone tissue that once surrounded the missing tooth bonds with the titanium post to secure it firmly into the jaw. Once the implant has stabilised (usually somewhere between 4-16 weeks) a lifelike porcelain crown can then be attached to it. Although this is usually carried out in the confines of the dental practice, it is a surgical procedure and therefore most patients will require some form of dental sedation Manchester. The good news is that once done, it’s permanent and can last for many years.

As you can see when it comes to broken tooth repair, there are a multitude of things a dentist can do, depending upon the severity of the problem tooth. From a simple white filling and composite bonding through to residents can rest assured knowing that they don’t have to suffer with a broken tooth.
