Dental Sedation Manchester – Helping Anxious Patients

A visit to the dentist makes most people feel somewhat anxious, so imagine what those who suffer with dental fear might be going through. Even the simplest of treatments or procedures such as a dental check-up, a hygiene clean, or being fitted for orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign Manchester might seem impossible to deal with.

So how can a  ensure even anxious patients get the very best treatment they deserve? The answer? Dental sedation. Manchester patients will be pleased to know that we offer the latest in sedation techniques to ensure that patients remain as relaxed and as stress-free as they possibly can.

What exactly is dental sedation?

Sedation dentistry uses medications to enable patients to fully relax during treatments. It’s sometimes referred to as ‘sleep dentistry’ although that’s not entirely accurate because in the vast majority of cases the patient remains fully awake and responsive, unless of course they’re placed under a general anaesthetic.

There are several different types of sedation offered by dentist depending upon the patient’s needs. These include:

Intravenous sedation

Intravenous or IV sedation is where a a mild sedative is introduced into the body via a small catheter placed in the back of the hand. A carefully controlled amount of sedative enters directly into the veins meaning that it goes to work quickly. The sedative can them be adjusted as and when necessary to give the patient the most comfort.

Inhalation sedation

This is one of the most commonly used forms of dental sedation in Manchester and is administered via a tiny mask which is placed over the nose. The idea is that the patient breathes in a harmless mixture of nitrous oxide more commonly known as ‘laughing gas’. Because the gas wears off almost immediately, it’s the only form of sedation where patients would be allowed to drive home after an appointment.

Oral sedation

This is less common in the UK and involves the patient taking a pill. Typically the drug is Halcion which is from the same family as Valium. Different doses of the drug can be prescribed with different strengths but it’s normally taken about 1 hour before treatment, after which point the patient should feel pretty drowsy but sufficiently awake.

Irrespective of the type of sedation a patent receives, they’re all designed to place the patient in a state of carefree relaxation, enabling the dentist to be able to carry out any procedures or treatment

necessary. Whether this is something as complex as dental implants, or something as straight forward as taking impressions of the mouth for  patients who feel anxious or suffer from dental fear can rest assured that there are techniques and processes that can help. At our practice we strongly advise all patients who feel even the slightest bit anxious to talk to us. We really care about our patients and as such we want to ensure they have the most comfortable experience as possible during their visit.
