Dental Sedation UK And What It Entails

Many treatments such as being fitted for orthodontic braces Manchester, replacing amalgam fillings with white fillings, hygiene cleans, and general check-up’s are relatively straight forward, non-surgical procedures. However others such as root canal therapy and dental implants Manchester do require surgery and can also be quite invasive. For this reason many dentists recommend patients have. So what exactly is it and more importantly, what does it entail?

Modern day dentistry is all about striving towards pain-free treatments and this includes procedures such as dental implants. One way to help with this is through the controlled use of dental sedation. It’s a cross between a local and general anaesthetic in which the patient remains awake and able to respond to the dentist just like a local anaesthetic, but also just like a general anaesthetic the patient won’t remember much, if anything, about the treatment. However unlike a general anaesthetic, patients can recover quickly without feeling sick or groggy.

So what types of dental sedation are on offer?

In essence there are 3 main types. These are

  • Inhalation Sedation – Administered using a harmless mixture of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oxygen
  • Oral sedation – Administered using a pill such as diazepam or tamazepam
  • Absorption sedation – Administered by an injection containing benzodiazepines

All three types of dental sedation have the same effect in that they make the patient feel incredibly relaxed, calm, and ‘in a happy place’. Once in this state, the patient will feel no pain and although awake, most have no recollection of the treatment at all. Aside from oral sedation which takes a little time to kick in, dental sedation is fast acting. What’s more recovery time is quick. In fact in the case of inhalation sedation, recovery is immediate.

For this reason aside from use alongside surgical procedures such as, dental sedation can also be used on nervous or anxious patients needing any form of treatment. This  might be because a patient suffers from a severe gag reflex yet needs orthodontic. Alternatively, it could simply be because a patient has a distinct fear of the dental chair and needs to remain calm to enable the dentist to carry out any necessary treatment. Whatever the reason, dental sedation UK is the modern alternative to local and general anaesthetics. Carefully controlled doses are monitored by an anaesthetist to ensure that the patient remains as comfortable as possible, and the rapid recovery ensures patients can go about their daily lives within a few hours.

If you’re a nervous or anxious patient or are in need of invasive surgical treatments such as dental implants, Manchester-based residents can talk to Shi Karim and the team at Church Road Dental and Cosmetics. As fully qualified dental sedation practitioners, patients can rest assured that they’re in safe and secure hands.
