Denture Repairs Manchester – Why Do Dentures Break?

Unfortunately despite modern-day dentures being more life like and lighter than their counterparts there is one problem that hasn’t changed and that’s their propensity to chip, crack, or break. For this reason denture repairs Manchester, or indeed anywhere else in the UK, are commonplace; but why do they break? Our dentist in Alderley Edge explains…

Ill-fitting

Unlike dental implants Manchester which are placed permanently into the mouth, dentures sit on the gum line and are supported by suction. This means that they have a tendency to rock about when not completely stable. When this happens the bite force is not evenly spread and as a result, some areas will unintentionally take more force than other areas, resulting in a weakening. Over time this, combined with a rocking motion, will cause the denture to break. The most common problem areas are the parts between the two front teeth or anywhere else where you have contact with natural teeth.

Banging or dropping

One of the most common needs for denture repairs in Manchester is because the wearer has accidentally dropped or banged their denture. This is usually through dropping it in the sink when cleaning it, or knocking it with the tap. Although the denture may not break right away, more often than not it’s severely weakened and cracks will show 3-6 months down the line.

Bruxism

Dentures can also be problematic for those people who grind their teeth. Otherwise known as bruxism, heavy grinders can exert pressure on their teeth that far exceeds that of a normal bite. The issue is that this mainly occurs during the night when they are least aware. Excess bite force can cause stress fractures on the dentures which then need repairing. For those who suffer from signs of bruxism, the obvious answer would be to take their dentures out when sleeping. Failing this, alternative high-impact dentures can also be made.

Now we know the problems that cause dental breakage, how should you care for them to avoid such issues?

Unlike dental Implants, Manchester denture wearers will need to ensure that their dentures are handled carefully to avoid breakage. Simple practices like placing a towel in the sink or on a hard surface before cleaning ensures that even if accidentally dropped, it won’t break. Also if dentures are removed for the night it’s important to store them in liquid to prevent warping. Make sure that the liquid is either tepid water or a mild cleaning solution. Never use very hot or boiling water to sterilise them as this can damage the plastic base.
