Emergency Dentistry: Dealing with a Knocked-out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth does not have to mean losing it. There is a high chance of putting it back into the socket, making it look like the avulsion did not happen. Doing this on your own is not advisable because of the risks of infection. Whether you were playing a contact sport or had an unfortunate accident, we can help put your knocked-out tooth back safely.

What to do with a Knocked-out Tooth

We may not be there when the avulsion happens, but there are ways to preserve your permanent tooth before meeting us and putting it back in place.

1. The Tooth – Stay calm and look for the knocked-out tooth. Pick it up by the crown (the whiter part) and never touch the nerve (yellow part), to prevent infection.

2. Cleaning – If the tooth got dirty, do not scrub or rinse with water. Use milk or a saline solution instead. Do not let the tooth become dry either, so be sure to soak it before sealing or wrapping.

3. Seek Help – Call our dental clinic for emergency treatment. Make sure to arrive 30 minutes after the time the tooth was knocked out, as this gives your tooth a higher chance of survival.
