How A Manchester Emergency Dentist Can Help You

Often when teeth are damaged by accidents it isn’t all smiles. Dental Manchester practices such as Church Road dental and cosmetics therefore have an experienced Manchester emergency dentist available on call who can fix your dental emergency quickly and efficiently. However this begs the question…. what constitutes a dental emergency? In other words, when should you call an out of hours emergency dentist and when should you leave it until the morning?

While it’s obvious that you wouldn’t contact an emergency dentist to ask about it mightn’t be so clear cut if you’ve suffered a chipped or broken tooth, have a crown that’s become loose, or had a filling that’s come out. The truth is that in many cases none of the above would constitute a dental emergency. However there are some exceptions.

Avulsed tooth

An avulsed tooth or teeth means that they’ve been knocked out completely. If this is the case you’ll usually be in a lot of pain and you may have lost a lot of blood. In this type of situation time is of the essence, so any type of prompt action is vital if you want to save your teeth.

Extruded teeth

As above this is a similar type of injury that’s normally caused by impact. This time however the tooth hasn’t completely fallen out and may instead be hanging on by a thread. Again time is key here and the speediness of treatment might make the difference between saving and not saving the tooth.

A broken tooth

Under normal circumstances a broken tooth wouldn’t normally be a dental emergency and instead should be dealt with at the earliest possible opportunity during normal working hours. However if the tooth is left jagged or sharp and is causing damage or pain to the lips and/or tongue, then this should be classed as a dental emergency

Damage to teeth causing severe pain

Any  will agree that severe tooth pain constitutes a emergency. As a result even if you’ve suffered a blow to the mouth and show no visible signs of missing, chipped, or broken teeth that may otherwise affect smiles, dental Manchester practices would still consider this as an emergency.

In most cases everything else should wait until a dental professional is available first thing in the morning. This includes situations such as broken braces, broken dentures, loose crowns, or dental implants. Even though these situations do need to be dealt with at the first possible opportunity, they probably wouldn’t constitute a call at 2am on a Wednesday morning.

So to recap…

While it’s clear that you aren’t likely to contact an emergency dentist wanting to find out how much a root canal costs UK residents in order to make cost comparisons, you should contact an emergency dentist is you experience:

  • Missing teeth from a blow to the face
  • Severe tooth pain caused by impact or damage to the face
  • Severe dental bleeding
