Teeth Whitening Manchester – Take Home Kits Explained

There is no doubt that one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available today is-based patients are fortunate because they have a multitude of practices available to them offering this very service. However when it comes to teeth whitening options it can be a little confusing.

Whether it’s a first-time cosmetic treatment or a treatment you’re undergoing prior to dental implants Manchester, most people know about the laser-teeth whitening that occurs in the practice. However less is known about the teeth whitening take-home kits that dentists also prescribe. At our Church Road dental practice we find that many of our patients are happy to use take home kits and  some use it in conjunction with our laser teeth whitening service which is carried out right here at the practice. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at how take home kits help to whiten teeth.

Firstly…what exactly are they?

More commonly known as night time home tray whitening systems, they come in a handy kit form that is designed to be used in the comfort of your own home. Custom-made trays filled with a special bleaching gel are designed to be placed on the teeth at night. In the morning the trays are removed and the gel is rinsed away enabling the person to carry out their normal daily routine. The following night the process is repeated. After somewhere between 6-8 weeks teeth should appear considerably whiter. During the 3-4 week point, around half way through your treatment, we advise patients to return to out Church Road dental practice where we’ll take a closer look to see how the teeth whitening process is going.

What about the advantages?

Clearly the main advantage to in-home teeth whitening Manchester is that treatments are carried out in the home home rather than at the dental practice making it both private and convenient. No one need ever know you’re undergoing treatment if you don’t feel like telling anyone. In addition it’s also cheaper. Typically in home teeth whitening treatments will cost somewhere between £200 – £300 whereas laser teeth whitening treatments start at around £500-£600, so there’s quite a difference in price.

A word of warning about prices

You may see teeth bleaching kits on sale at places like Amazon for as little as £10. Understandably you might consider this is the ideal scenario, especially if you’re looking to get your teeth whitened prior to say expensive dental treatment such as However when it comes to teeth whitening kits you get what you pay for and the quality of the product and the results it achieves is usually reflected in this. In addition and rather more alarmingly, many cheap teeth whitening kits aren’t certified by the British Dental Health Foundation, so they could be doing you more harm than good. Conversely with a teeth whitening kit you get from the dentist you’re guaranteed a certain level of teeth whiteness and of course it’s BDHF approved, so it’s been tested and is completely safe to use.

So why would you pay more for laser teeth whitening?

Two reasons, speed and whiter teeth. We’ve already mentioned that teeth whitening using take home kits takes on average 6-8 weeks to achieve results. However with laser teeth whitening carried out in the dental practice results can be achieved in as little as 1 x 45 minute session. How come? Because treatment is carried out by trained dentists they use carefully controlled amounts of stronger bleaching gels. This means whiter teeth can be achieved quicker.

Combination treatments

Many dentists including our very ownuse combinations of take home treatments and laser teeth whitening treatments to deliver the desired results. This may involve a course of take home treatments followed by a final ‘in-practice’ teeth whitening session, or a teeth whitening session at the practice followed by top-up usage at home to keep your teeth looking white.
