Teeth whitening is a complicated treatment which is why the professional treatment costs more than your average DIY kit. These over the counter treatments are cheap which is why many people go for them, but with the low cost comes many dangers. The most common form of over the counter whitening product is the tray kit. These contain a mouth guard which is not fitted to your individual mouth but rather ‘one size fits all.’ The bleaching gel is applied inside the mouth guard and then placed over the teeth. As the mouth guard is not customised to your mouth, there can be gaps which allow the bleaching solution to leak out into the mouth. This can cause discomfort, blistering of the gums, infections and stomach issues. Even without the risk of the leaking bleach, the damage to teeth can be irreversible. Small cavities can be opened furthur and deep cavities could be giving the bleach direct access to blood vessels, nerves and even bone causing terrible tooth aches and long term problems.
With all these health risks, you would hope that these over the counter products still whitened the teeth. However, in the case of the tray kit, because the mouth piece is not fitted to each individual, the whitening effect can be patchy and uneven. Other products, including whitening strips and mouth rinses, often are either not strong enough, and therefore have no visible effect, or they are too abrasive. Dentin, a hard substance that naturally surrounds the tooth, is a yellow colour; this often shows through the enamel, giving teeth that natural yellow tinge. When whitening products are very abrasive they may remove the stains, but also attack the enamel revealing the yellow dentin beneath and actually make the teeth appear more yellow, rather than white.
