Dental Fluorosis: Treating Stains
Dental fluorosis is a condition caused by over-consumption of fluoride resulting in permanent stains on teeth such as white lines or flecks. Although fluorosis stains are not harmful, the cosmetic aspect can be frustrating and leave you feeling self-conscious, even if the marks are only really noticeable to yourself and your dentist.
To improve your smile, some dentists will recommend professional tooth whitening to mask or cover the marks which can sometimes be brown as well as white.
– Fluorosis is caused by a lack of minerals as a result of consuming too much fluoride while permanent teeth are developing.
– Fluoride is added to drinking water and dental products, including mouthwash and toothpaste, which leads to some children absorbing too much.
– Fluorosis currently affects up to 25% of Americans.
