How to be kind to your teeth through the Christmas binge…

Can you really be kind to your teeth at Christmas? Think of all the cake, selection-box chocolates and mince pies you’ll be tucking into. Those of a “certain age” will have been enjoying their advent calendar choccies for the best part of three weeks already.
So how can you enjoy Christmas and avoid giving your teeth a sugar overload? Here are our top five tips for a low-sugar Christmas, without giving up on the treats:
  1. Go nuts. Unshelled nuts are a Christmas favourite and they’re really nutritious, packed full of fibre, protein and minerals. Have fun with the kids cracking almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts. Just remember that whole nuts are not suitable for children under five because of the risk of choking – and be aware of allergies
  2. Budding home cooks should avoid using sugar in baking. Use honey instead. If you must use sweetener, use natural and not artificial sweeteners
  3. Regularly drink water to keep the stomach full. Yes, you might want the loo during the Corrie Christmas Special, but it’ll help keep your energy levels higher. When energy drops, the first thing you crave is sugar
  4. Alcohol – what can we say? Alcohol is bad for three reasons. One, it contains sugar. Two, it relaxes you to an extent where you’re not going to care about sugar. Three, a hangover leaves you lacking in energy – see Point 3. We could also add a fourth – do you remember to brush your teeth when you’ve had a few? Be honest now…
  5. Get some rest! If you’re feeling tired, you’re more likely to feel lazy. If you feel lazy, that fast food tea will appeal even more. Don’t succumb to the temptation!
The other thing about Christmas is routine, or the lack of it. Be honest. You’ve had a day of playing games with the kids, nibbling food and sipping the Shiraz. You’re relaxed. You’re not in work. When you go to bed, you don’t bother to clean your teeth. It’s only one day.
That may be. But remember, you’ve just spent treating yourself to the sweet stuff. Your teeth need cleaning now, perhaps more than any other time of the year.  So even if you have to wait for the bathroom because the mother-in-law is putting her curlers in, it’s better to wait and give your teeth a good brush. The last thing you want, as New Year dawns, is toothache.
Anyway, that’s enough bah humbug from us! Have a great, pearly white Christmas, from all of us here at Church Road Dental and Cosmetics.
