Laser Teeth whitening Manchester –The Best And Worst Candidates

While more and more people are turning to laser teeth whitening Manchester not everyone is a suitable candidate. For example is whitening your teeth before undergoing treatment for dental implants Manchester a good idea? Or what about those with fillings, crowns, or other restorations? Our Church Road dental practice has decided to spill the beans and talk to you about what makes for a good or bad candidate. Without further ado, let’s dive straight in….

In an ideal world, the perfect teeth whitening patient would be someone who has a healthy set of unrestored teeth. Those with zero fillings and healthy gums who are simply looking to brighten up their smile would make up the best candidates. However this isn’t an ideal world and people don’t always have perfect teeth. For this reason it’s always best to consult with your dentist before undergoing the process, as there may well be exceptions, or treatments that dentists can use to help.

Sensitive gums and worn enamel

Having said that, there are occasions when undergoing laser teeth whitening in Manchester, or indeed any city for that matter, is not a good idea. Teeth whitening procedures carried out in the dental practice although quick and efficient, can cause a certain amount of tooth sensitivity. This is natural and can take 24-48 hours to subside after treatment. Therefore it stands to reason that those with sensitive gums, exposed tooth roots, and/or worn enamel and cavities may respond even more sensitively to the treatment, and in some cases may feel pain. For this reason dentists may want to think twice before carrying out this particular procedure. However in some cases where the patient is undergoing missing teeth replacement such as dental implants, Manchester dentists may decide,  along with the patient, that teeth whitening is best before treatment to achieve the very best smile possible.

Age, pregnancy, and allergies

At our Church Road Dental Practice we don’t allow teeth whitening to anyone under the age of 16, but prefer to treat people over 18 years of age. This isn’t simply us being pedantic. There’s a genuine reason for it. In teenagers, particularly those aged 16 and under, the nerves of the tooth and the pulp chamber are still developing. As a result teeth whitening treatment at this age can cause severe sensitivity. Teeth whitening has also been known to cause prolonged teeth sensitivity in pregnant women and should therefore be avoided. Finally there are people who are allergic to peroxide. As this is the main ingredient in the majority of teeth whitening treatments those people would need to avoid this type of procedure.

If you’re not sure whether you’re a good candidate for laser teeth whitening Manchester or for having treatment before undergoing dental implants Manchester, then come and talk to Church Road Dental. Our experienced and friendly team led by Dr Shi Karim will assess your needs and find the right treatment for you.
