Put a smile on your face with New Year detox success…

It’s reached that point in the New Year when our will is broken and we begin to renege on our New Year’s resolutions.

But if you’ve made it this far, don’t give up just yet! Cutting out alcohol and those (albeit tasty) sugary and fattening foods as part of a healthy diet can have a very positive impact on your dental health, as well as general wellbeing. To help you maintain your health eating and drinking efforts at this difficult time, we’ve compiled a reminder of just why you’re cutting down on certain foods and drinks, along with some teeth-friendly substitutes.

Alcohol

Unfortunately alcohol isn’t great for your teeth. Although in its purest form it doesn’t cause damage the sugar added to give many alcoholic drinks (including beer) their flavour can seriously damage your enamel.

Furthermore, dental hygiene often gets forgotten after a night out on the tiles, with most of us choosing to fall straight into bed, rather than sticking to brushing and flossing twice a day to maintain a healthy mouth. To avoid dental damage from alcohol follow these simple tips:

  • Leave a Reminder – If you’re going for a night out, leave your toothbrush on your pillow as a reminder to brush properly when you get home.
  • Avoid Alcohol – If you’re on dry January, good for you! Keep it up. But avoid substituting alcohol for soft drinks which are also packed with sugar. The best drink for your teeth is of course water, but  you will be pleased to hear that there are a few cocktails that can be considered healthy and not damaging for your teeth, including the gin based ‘Gimlet’ and the famous Vodka Martini.

Chocolate and Sugary Snacks

Cutting out sweet treats is a given when dieting, but it doesn’t just benefit your waistline, it’s great for your teeth too. That said, there’s no need to deprive yourself of little indulgences.

  • Go Sugar Free – If you do fancy something sweet, make sure you pick a sugar free alternative, as this will be lower in calories and better for your teeth
  • Try Fibre Rich Foods – Fibre can be good for your teeth, so discover alternative, fibre-rich snacks, such as nuts. Nuts are high in energy but won’t damage your teeth, making them an ideal snack for busy people

While you’re putting all this effort into getting healthy for 2014, while not book an appointment with us now and enjoy a full health check on your teeth and mouth. You’ll be able to talk to us about our cosmetic services too,  including our ‘Smile Makeover’ and incredible Invisalign service, so you can look a great as you feel.
