The wisdom of teeth

There are so many facts and myths surrounding wisdom teeth (third molars), which means that sometimes the real wisdom can get lost. Understanding the facts about your wisdom teeth can mean the difference between persistent impacted gums and a less-crowded mouth.

Here are some top facts about wisdom teeth and dentistry:

Why are wisdom teeth so tricky?

Your wisdom teeth usually make an appearance in your late teens and early twenties.  They can take a long time to break through your gums and it is often here that the problem lies.  More often than not, wisdom teeth can grow horizontally which means that the angle in which they sit and push through your gums can cause great discomfort.  Wisdom teeth can make your mouth overcrowded, which in turn can affect other teeth.

Anthropologists believe that our teeth were designed for a much tougher diet than the one we have nowadays and that is why wisdom teeth often don’t make an appearance until our dental arch grows larger; in order to accommodate them.  Which means, if there is no room in our mouth then they often get impacted.

What is impaction?

Impaction is where your wisdom teeth struggle to tear through your gums and thus, stay impacted. This can cause a great deal of pain and it is often at this point that a dentist would advise the removal of your wisdom teeth.

How are wisdom teeth removed?

In order to fully check that your wisdom teeth need to be removed, we would first x-ray your teeth.  Sometimes it can be slightly more complicated than removing a normal tooth, but we will talk you through the process and ensure that you understand what will happen.

After extraction

We understand that any form of extraction or dental surgery can be extremely daunting and can sometimes leave you in pain.  Swelling or slight bleeding may occur after your extraction and you may be prescribed pain killers and antibiotics to help with after-effects.  You may find that ice applied to the side of your face will help and you may want to stick to soft or liquid foods for a while.

Always speak to us if you have any questions regarding your after care. At Church Road Dental & Cosmetics, we are on hand to guide you through the process and to put you at ease.  If you are experiencing trouble with your wisdom teeth then make sure you speak to us as soon as you can.  Dealing with the issue sooner, rather than later, can be a big difference.
