Why Root Canal Treatment Manchester Isn’t Always The Best Option

When serious tooth infection strikes dentists will often perform dentists carry out such treatment when the inner tooth pulp has been badly infected, causing pain, which in many cases can be very severe. During the procedure the infected inner pulp of the tooth is removed, the area is thoroughly cleaned, and the hole where the pulp once was is filled with a permanent seal. It may also be that the patient will need to visit a Manchester crown clinic to have the tooth capped to provide extra protection.

So now there’s no infection and no pain, and the tooth has been protected with a crown. Job done right? Well not quite because eventually all root canals fail. The reason? Because the material used to fill the cavity (known as the Gutta Percha) will deteriorate over time, meaning the tooth will have to be refilled. However because the tooth is effectively dead, the surrounding bone tissue that once supported the tooth nerve will waste away in a process known as bone resorption. Overtime this may have a knock-on effect on the remaining healthy teeth. For this reason  just might be a better solution. Let’s take a closer look.

Long term solution

Even though one of the priorities of dentists is to save teeth, root canal treatment is effectively a short term solution. Conversely a dental implant offers a permanent solution that may last the  patient 30 years or more if looked after properly. So how does it work?

Once the dead tooth has been removed and the infection cleared the dentist will secure a dental implant down into the jawbone. Because it’s made from titanium it naturally fuses with the bone making an incredibly strong platform. After a few months once the implant has stabilised, the patient will visit a Manchester crown clinic to have a life-like prosthetic tooth fitted.

Other benefits of a dental implant

Aside from having a great looking fully functional tooth, an implant can actually halt the bone loss process. Since the implant takes on the function of the missing tooth root, it not only secures the implant into the gums, but stimulates the surrounding bone and soft tissue promoting healthy new growth. This effectively puts a halt to bone loss and also protecting the health of the patient’s  remaining teeth.

Understandably dental implants in Manchester aren’t cheap but the long-term benefits might far outweigh those of undergoing root canal treatment Manchester.
