Chronic Periodontitis and Age-Related Macular Degeneration
A team of researchers have identified a link between chronic severe gum disease (periodontitis) and age-related macular degeneration, the main cause of permanent vision loss in the elderly:
– The responsible pathogen appears to be the Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria, which causes chronic periodontitis and can invade other tissues such as human retinal-pigment epithelial cells found in the eye.
– Other studies have shown links between chronic periodontitis and other systemic diseases.
– Visit your dentist regularly to keep your teeth healthy and prevent gum disease from becoming a serious problem.
“This is the first study to demonstrate the link between oral pathobiont infection and AMD pathogenesis.”
