Dental Abscess: Causes and Cures
A dental abscess, typically a swollen pus-filled area, is usually caused by either an infected tooth or gum disease. The underlying cause and extent of the abscess will determine how it is treated by a dentist but treatment will usually follow a specific path:
– The abscess will be lanced and drained
– The affected tooth will be treated
– Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent the infection returning
In cases of gum disease the dentist may opt for a deep cleaning of the tooth roots at the infected site. In extreme cases “patients will need to have their tooth extracted” but this can usually be avoided if the abscess is treated early.
