Bad Taste and Smell in Your Mouth The Dental Hygiene Facts
If you wake up in the morning with a bad taste or smell in your mouth, you’re not alone. Morning breath is an extremely common issue and affects most people at some point in their lives. It is typically caused by not brushing your teeth properly before you go to bed at night, and usually fades after following your dental hygiene routine upon waking. If, however, you find the problem persisting even after your morning clean, you may have a problem that needs further investigation.
Getting to The Bottom of Bad Breath
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, despite being a taboo subject in more social circles, is one of the concerns most frequently presented to the dentist. A bad taste in your mouth, also known as dysgeusia, is also fairly common. The good news is that both these issues can usually be solved easily once addressed.
Ignoring the issue, however, means the problem may worsen and become more complicated to treat. Dental hygiene facts dictate that early treatment is key, and making an appointment with your dentist as soon as symptoms appear is an important first step. If you notice that you regularly wake up with a bad taste or smell in the mouth, your mouth feels different to normal, and either of these symptoms are persisting post-clean, it’s time to make an appointment.
Good Dental Hygiene: Facts to Inform Your Routine
It is essential that you look after your teeth properly from an early age to prevent dental health concerns as you get older. Humans have only one set of natural adult teeth and, despite advances in dental technology, it is important to remember that no alternatives are as ideal as your original teeth. Good dental hygiene is therefore crucial to maintaining healthy teethover time.
This includes:
Brushing your teeth with a suitable toothbrush and toothpaste every morning and before bed at night
Flossing between your teeth and after meal times
Using a suitable mouthwash to remove lingering food particles and bacteria
Most importantly, visiting your dentist on a regular basis
According to best-practice dental hygiene facts, individuals benefit most when visiting their dentist at least once every six months. If you are prone to dental health concerns such as bad breath or cavities, it may benefit you to schedule visits more often.
Your dentist is able to clean your teeth in ways that are not possible at home, plus identify any concerns earlier on and treat them appropriately before they escalate.
What Happens When You Don’t Look After Your Teeth Properly?
When you do not clean your teeth properly, bacteria and food particles linger. These food particles rot, causing a bad smell or taste in the mouth. When you eat or drink, bacteria in your mouth multiply, producing sulphur compounds that contribute to these unpleasant odours. Properly brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is usually enough to remove food particles and lingering bacteria, leaving your mouth clean and fresh.
Poor Dental Hygiene: Facts About Common Diseases
However, in the absence of a good dental hygiene routine, you may find that bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth either won’t go away or comes back very quickly despite brushing. In this instance, it is important to visit your dentist as soon as possible.
These symptoms could lead to gum disease or more serious periodontal disease. One of the main tell-tale signs of these conditions is bad breath, often accompanied by a metallic taste in your mouth. Gum and periodontal disease are caused by poor dental hygiene but also other factors, including underlying illnesses such as diabetes, or poor lifestyle choices such as smoking.
Understanding Dental Disease
Your dentist will be able to identify the issue and then provide you with a solution. If you are suffering from underlying health issues, for example, diabetes, certain respiratory disorders, or a liver or kidney disorder, this can sometimes have a direct effect on your oral health. Certain medications can also have an ill effect on your teeth, such as antacids, antibiotics and chemotherapy. In these cases, it is important to visit the dentist more regularly and maintain better dental hygiene to reduce health risks.
Dental Hygiene Facts to Inform Treatment
If your concerns are caused as a result of smoking, excessive drinking or other poor lifestyle choices, you may want to reconsider certain behaviours in an effort to improve the state of your teeth, as well as your overall health and well-being.
If you have developed bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth because of poor dental hygiene, this is usually a straightforward issue to address. Your dentist will advise how you can look after your teeth better and may recommend you to a hygienist. They can help you clean your teeth further, remove the bacteria underneath your gums responsible for gum and periodontal disease and help you on your way to enjoying better dental health.
Ignoring your symptoms or avoiding the dentist can cause simple issues like bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth to progress quickly to gumand periodontal disease, or further complications. If you suspect you have issues that need to be addressed, make an appointment with your dentist to learn more about important dental hygiene facts and how to treat or prevent issues with the teeth and gums.

Really happy with my experience here. The team explained my options clearly with upfront pricing and fitted my treatment around my travel plans. My crown was made and fitted the same day, and my braces are already making a visible difference. Big thanks to Dr Awais and Dr Eve very nice people.Would recommend.
I came across this dental practice when doing research on having braces. Initially I had a consultation regarding options. The practice is lovely and clean. The staff are amazing, they are very attentive. I am glad I chose here to have my treatment. I’m now roughly 7/8 appointments in, all of my visits have been great. I would highly recommend. If you are looking for dental or orthodontist - these guys are really good at what they do!
Reception area lovely and staff very welcoming. I was impressed by the attention to detail with the photos of my teeth/gums so when I got to see Hope she had them on screen. Hope was very knowledgable and explained everything from options to finance. Very impressed with my first visit. If I could I would have had the treatment right then and there as the whole experience was very relaxed but professional. Highly recommend.
I booked a visit as I was looking for a second opinion on tooth implant. It is my top front tooth so definitely want to get it right.Staff have been very friendly, inviting and professional. After seeing modern equipment used plus the customer service I have decided to go ahead with Cheadle Hulme dental clinic.
Had a lovely experience at Cheadle Hulme Dental .I was referred her by my own Dentist for a scan on my wisdom tooth. The practice is very clean and inviting when you walk in the staff on the desk are welcome too. There were refreshments available for customers hot drinks and water which I thought was nice you don’t normally see that at a dental practice. Wasn’t waiting to long to be seen. when called for my scan everything was explained to me . Would definitely recommend Cheadle Hulme Dental and Cosmetic.
I can’t recommend Cheadle Hulme Dental highly enough!Back in October 2025, I had composite bonding on my upper front teeth after breaking my two front teeth. From my very first appointment, Hope made me feel completely at ease. She was incredibly welcoming, explained every step of the process in detail, was transparent about the pricing, and made sure I knew they offered interest-free payment plans, which was a huge help.Unfortunately, around six months later I chipped one of the bonded teeth while eating. I contacted the practice, and Megan was fantastic. She arranged an appointment for me quickly and made the whole process stress-free.At my appointment, Mo repaired my teeth, and I honestly couldn’t be happier. His work is exceptional, and he was professional, reassuring, and sorted everything out without any hassle. The whole team genuinely cares about their patients and always goes above and beyond to provide outstanding care. I wouldn’t hesitate to return for any future dental treatment and would highly recommend Cheadle Hulme Dental to anyone looking for a friendly, professional, and caring practice.Thank you to the whole team for looking after me so well!
I originally went with an emergency ( having not been to the Dentist for many many years, due to a phobia) I saw Ben who was fantastic and really put me at ease, he was extremely patient with me and talked me through some ways they can support patients who have a fear of going.I’ve since been back to register with them as a new patient and had a full check up due to how supportive they were. The surgery itself is extremely tidy and clean and all staff I have come across were friendly and professional.
I had a very positive experience at Cheadle Hulme Dental & Aesthetics. Ben was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and caring. He managed to save and repair my child's tooth when other dentists had recommended extraction, which we were very grateful for.The entire team was friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our visits. The practice was clean, modern, and well-maintained, and we felt genuinely cared for as patients from start to finish. The cost of treatment was also very reasonable and represented excellent value for the quality of care provided.I would highly recommend Ben and the whole team at Cheadle Hulme Dental & Aesthetics to anyone looking for high-quality dental care.
I think we can all agree that going to the dentist can be nerve wracking, but the team at Cheadle Hulme Dental made me feel really welcome from the moment i arrived, especially as I had my son with me.The ladies on reception were lovely, and Hope was so reassuring and helpful in explaining everything that was needed. There was absolutely no pressure whatsoever, which made the whole experience much more comfortable. The practice was really clean and they even offered tea, coffee, biscuits, and water which was such a nice touch. I’d definitely recommend them to anyone who feels nervous about visiting the dentist.
