Common Errors When Brushing Teeth
Although not all dental issues can be put down to incorrect brushing and flossing, a great many problems can be avoided when the basics are done correctly.
Using the wrong type of toothbrush, brushing too vigorously or too softly, bad technique or simply not brushing twice daily are common failures for many people. But all these are easily remedied with a little application and will power.
Best practices include:
- Don’t brush too harshly and only ever use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Brush using only short strokes, while holding the brush at about 45 degrees to the gumline.
- Don’t brush immediately after eating; wait at least half an hour afterwards.
Another common error is forgetting to brush the backs of the front teeth. Because they are more awkward to reach, these are commonly missed areas when brushing — and a prime location for bacteria and plaque to build up.
Following these basic guidelines, in combination with regular check-ups at the dentist, will greatly reduce the risk of plaque, tartar and bacterial build-up and greatly improve overall dental health.
