Dental Health- New Year’s Resolutions to Improve it

A new year is a time for making resolutions. How about this year you make some resolutions related to your dental health? Improving dental health should be a goal for all of us, because if we do not look after our teeth then we will lose them. And, considering the role they play in keeping us alive it is vitally important that we try to look after them. Here are some ideas for New Year’s Resolutions that you can make which will help to improve your dental health.

Commit to Brushing Twice per Day To Maintain Good Dental Health

Brushing twice per day, for at least 2 minutes is vital for maintaining good oral health. Plaque builds up during the day from foods we consume and this must be removed otherwise it attacks our teeth.

Rinse After Meals

While you may not want to brush right after every meal (unless you have braces or aligners in), it’s a good for your oral health to rinse your mouth with water after meals. This will help to remove any debris and leftover food.

Floss Nightly, No Matter What

Less than half of the population flosses every day. Are you part of this statistic? Flossing is vital for good dental health as it removes food that the toothbrush simply cannot reach. It doesn’t take long at all and is the best thing to add into your dental health routine if it’s not already part of it.

Visit Your Dentist Twice This Year

Did you know that you should have two dental visits per year? Regular dental check ups are vital for good oral health as the dentist can spot early sighs of decay and treat it before it gets worse. They also screen your mouth at these visits to spot for signs of cancer or other diseases.

Visit Your Hygienist Twice This Year

Hygiene visits are vital for your dental health as they will remove the tartar that forms from plaque that has not been removed. This tartar is harmful to your teeth and will cause tooth decay and gum disease if not removed. Eating Less Sugar is Vital to Your Dental Health

We all know from childhood that sugar is bad for our teeth. This doesn’t stop us from eating it, though. Howver, too many sugar attacks throughout the day will be detrimental to your dental health. It is recommended that we only have 4 sugar attacks in one day, and this includes all meals as every food contains some form of sugar. For this reason, if you are going to eat foods high in sugar it should be done at mealtimes, rather than at separate times of the day.
