Proper dental care should begin at an early age as the habits learned early will last a lifetime. Taking good care of teeth and gums is paramount to good dental care and children learn best by example.

Parents play a crucial in the development of good dental health habits — and establishing a proper routine. Once a child is old enough to brush and floss his or her own teeth, parents should:

Establish a Regular Routine. As far as possible, brushing and flossing should be done at the same time every day so it becomes second nature to a child.

Make Brushing Fun. Brushing and flossing can become a fun activity for all the family — by including little games during this time. Ensure that younger children are supervised, and that they are doing things correctly.

Pick a Friendly Dentist. Selecting the right child-friendly dentist is just as important as brushing and flossing correctly. Visits to the dentist should be looked forward to and not feared.

It cannot be stressed enough that “setting a good example for your child” is vitally important for their dental health. Children imitate their parents and are more likely to care for their teeth if they see their parents do the same.
