Do Dental Implants Become Discoloured?

Dental implants are designed to match the teeth they are replacing in size, shape and colour. The result is a “false” tooth which is actually a dental crown that is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth and almost impossible to detect.

The implant needs no special treatment and is brushed and flossed exactly like a natural tooth. However, like our natural teeth, implants are not immune to the passage of time or from staining due to the foods and drinks we consume or from tobacco smoke.

Today’s dental crowns are usually made from porcelain which is highly resistant to staining and regular brushing and flossing should limit any discolouration and prolong the crown’s lifespan.

Over time, however, it is inevitable that some discolouration will occur but this is normal. You may wish to replace the crown if whitening doesn’t lighten the colour.
