How to Care for Removable Orthodontic Braces: A Comprehensive Guide

Over the last few years, removable orthodontic braces have become one of the most popular methods of teeth straightening. This is especially true amongst adults who avoided traditional braces  previously or simply did not receive orthodontic treatment when they were younger.

There are different brands of removable orthodontic braces, although the mechanism by which they work mostly remains the same. The most popular of these is Invisalign.  Invisalign was the pioneer of removable orthodontic braces and now treats thousands of patients across the world every year. Since its introduction, Invisalign has been used to improve the smiles of more than 17 million patients and continues to be the most popular form of removable orthodontic braces among patients across the world.

The Benefits of Removable Orthodontic Braces

Removable orthodontic braces such as Invisalign are discreet, convenient, simple to use, and at the same time highly effective for addressing orthodontic issues. These issues include crooked or protruding teeth, general misalignment of the teeth, as well as bite disorders. For patients with minor orthodontic issues or those who have already undergone orthodontic treatment when they were younger but found that their teeth have started to slip back, an Inman aligner is another popular type of removable orthodontic brace. While this aligner focuses on visible teeth only, it is a popular choice that is highly effective.

Looking After Your Removable Orthodontic Braces

To obtain optimum results from your removable braces, it is important that you look after them carefully and strictly adhere to your dentist’s guidelines.

Optimal Wear Time:

Unlike traditional braces that are attached to your mouth throughout the treatment process, removable orthodontic braces can be taken out as you wish. While this is a convenient feature, it means that treatment is limited to when you are wearing your braces. You are responsible for making sure that you wear and change your aligners as directed by the dentist so that the movement of your teeth is controlled and consistent, and you can obtain the predicted or desired results.

Eating Protocols:

Removable braces such as the Inman aligner require regular cleaning but can be kept in your mouth when you eat or drink. Those such as Invisalign, however, do need to be taken out at meal times and when you eat or drink anything other than water. Braces can otherwise become damaged and stained.

Although they are strong enough for teeth straightening,  they are not designed to withstand the force of biting and chewing. Also, they are not designed to withstand high temperatures, so eating or drinking something hot may distort and alter the shape of your braces.

Not adhering to eating protocols with your removable orthodontic braces means they may not work as effectively and the course of your treatment may be altered. This can prolong the treatment period as well as increase the cost of your treatment.

Effective Cleaning:

Removable braces such as Invisalign stain very easily. The plastic design is thin to promote comfort, but as a result, most types of beverages will cause staining. Again, this means it is necessary to remove your braces before drinking anything apart from water.

It is also important that you clean your removable braces as directed. This is not only to remove and prevent any stains but also for hygiene purposes. To clean your removable braces you can brush them with an ordinary toothbrush and toothpaste. You will also likely be provided with cleaning crystals which you can dissolve and soak your braces in whilst they are out of your mouth. Simply rinse them before you put them back in.

Be sure to brush your teeth before putting removable orthodontic braces back in your mouth. This will prevent any bacteria or food particles from becoming trapped in between your teeth and the braces, which could ultimately lead to cavities and tooth decay.

Appropriate Storage:

It is important to store your braces correctly when they are out of your mouth. You will be given a travel case to put your braces in whenever you remove them. This is a hygienic practice that helps you to keep your braces clean and also ensures you are far less likely to damage your braces when they are not in use.

Keeping removable orthodontic braces in the correct container also helps you form a habit and prevents you from losing them. If anyone else at home is undergoing orthodontic treatment at the same time, it also means that you won’t mix up your aligners with someone else’s.

Taking good care of your aligners, following your dentist’s guidelines and visiting the dentist regularly will help you build a beautiful smile conveniently and discreetly. Speak to your dentist today to get started on your journey with removable orthodontic braces.
