Denture Repair Manchester – How Is A Denture Repaired?

There are many reasons why you might need denture repair Manchester. The good news is that at our Didsbury dental practice, as well as carrying out dental implants, Manchester-based technicians are also available to help you with denture repairs.
Dentures aren’t infallible and they often break for a number of reasons. These include:

  • The age of a denture
  • Dentures being dropped or banged, usually when not being worn
  • A heavy bite, teeth grinding, or clenching (known as bruxism)
  • Dentures that are ill-fitting

These are just some of the common problems, so if your denture does happen to break, don’t worry, you’re probably not alone.

Important things to remember when dentures break

The most important point to remember is to avoid fixing it yourself. Most strong household glues are volatile to dental ceramic and will melt the plastic around the edges of any join you try to repair. Even if you try to repair the break using Super Glue, which doesn’t melt plastic, you are facing 3 major drawbacks.

  • Firstly the glue is water soluble so the repair will at best be only temporary.
  • Secondly it’s very difficult for the break to be glued back together perfectly without some type of ridging. Even the slightest bump will tell when it’s worn in the mouth.
  • And finally…. Glue is solvent-based and therefore may cause harm in the form of sickness or a stomach upset as it’s not designed to be used within the body.

This is why it’s important to bring your dentures along to our Didsbury dental practice to undergo denture repairs Manchester at the earliest possible convenience.

So how do dentures get repaired?

Firstly, denture repair clinics don’t glue any broken pieces together, even if there’s a nice neat fracture line. Instead specialist repairers will use wax to reattach the broken pieces together. This is carried out as a temporary measure. Next the denture is placed back into the mouth to ensure a good fit. If everything feels right then either plaster or silicone matrix is poured into the denture covering the fracture line. When set the breakage line has been covered revealing a virtually seamless surface. Finally the last step is to remove the excess silicone (4-5 mm around the fracture line) and replace it with a new acrylic base to give an overall smooth surface. This is then polished and buffed to a smooth finish.

In terms of time, some practices operate an emergency repair while you wait service where straight forward denture repairs Manchester may be carried out in as little as 30 minutes. However for more problematic repairs, be prepared to wait a few days.

As you can see we deal with all manner of denture problems from initial fitting and manufacture through to denture repairs and renewals.
