The Different Types of Tooth Discolouration

Extrinsic Stains

Extrinsic stains are seen on the outer surface of the tooth. They manifest due to external factors, such as dental plaque, certain food and beverages, tobacco, bacteria and compounds used as topical medications.

Extrinsic stains occur because the teeth can absorb the colour pigments of the things that get into your mouth. When it comes to food, the culprits are coffee, soda, blackberries and tea. Chromogenic bacteria also cause black stains, which contains ferric sulfide. Green stains, on the other hand, may be caused by bacteria and fungi.

Certain medicines, especially those that contain iron, may also cause black stains. Some types of mouthwash that contain potassium compounds may cause violet or blackish stains.

Intrinsic Stains

Intrinsic stains are a more complicated dental discoloration. Generally, they are caused by certain dental conditions, traumas and infections. Deficiencies in nutrients and genetic factors may also contribute to staining. Normally, intrinsic stains are characterised by grey or striped stains.

Other than extreme decays, dental materials may also cause discoloration. These materials commonly include pastes and sealers.
