Bottlemouth Syndrome Explained

Bottlemouth syndrome, also called baby bottle tooth decay, is a form of tooth decay which is caused by overexposing developing teeth to sugar. Most often the condition affects the front teeth but it can also be detrimental to any of a child’s teeth.

Early tooth decay occurs when drinking acidic drinks from a bottle which focuses acids on the tooth enamel. The weakened or damaged tooth enamel becomes vulnerable to harmful bacteria which can lead to tooth infections, cavities and decay.

Feeding by bottle is often necessary — but should be carefully regulated as tots most at risk are those who:

– Suck on a bottle excessively

– Take the bottle to bed for naps or during sleep

– Use the bottle as a pacifier or soother

It is quite common for babies to have juice, milk, formula or soda in their bottle, but these are acidic drinks. Parents should only use a bottle at feeding times and for the minimum period of time required to finish the drink.

Symptoms of bottlemouth include sensitivity or pain. However, a parent may not detect these symptoms. This is why a child’s dental development should be monitored regularly by a dentist.
