Does Having Dental Implants Manchester Hurt – What Should You Expect?

Well, you might be surprised to learn that most of our patients who have dental implant surgery will tell you that the procedure doesn’t hurt and the discomfort is really minimal. Phew! In fact, believe it or not, having a tooth removed is actually considered to be more painful than placing an implant into the jaw! If you’re still really worried though, there are options available such as dental sedation, and Manchester patients often find this really helps.
 

So how does implant surgery work?

Getting dental implants in Manchester is a process, so it doesn’t happen overnight. This means there’ll be numerous visits – and also several months of waiting while the implant heals. Although we want to focus this post more on what it’s like to have the procedure rather than how it’s performed, we’ll quickly run through what’s involved with you first so at least you’ll have a rough idea of what to expect…

So firstly during the procedure, an incision is made in the gum. The implant is then positioned into the jawbone that replaces the original root of the tooth.

Secondly, after the implant is placed, we’ll suture the gums back together using dissolvable stitches. At this point, the implant must be left alone to heal for approximately 3-6 months so that the jawbone can fuse around it. If your gap is noticeable, don’t worry! We’ll make sure you have temporary crowns placed while you wait.

After the implant has healed, we’ll then place an abutment onto the implant, which is an extension of the implant post and serves as a base for the new replacement tooth to be secured onto. An impression of the abutment is taken at this stage, which will be used to create your new tooth. Once we get your restoration back from the dental lab, it can then finally be fitted and there you have it, the process is complete.

But now for the real question…

Will there be a pain with the implant surgery?

Far less than you’d think! If the above sounds pretty gruesome, don’t worry it’s really not as bad as it sounds. With a local anaesthetic being used for placing dental implants, Manchester patients will still be awake during surgery, but we’ll make sure that you’re well and truly numb and won’t feel a thing.

Another important point to note: along with being anaesthetised, it might help to know that there aren’t actually many pain receptors in the jawbone, so very little pain can be felt anyway.

There’s also another option. If preferred, or you’re extremely nervous, we can always provide dental sedation. Manchester patients find it helps them to more easily relax and also makes them more comfortable during surgery – kind of like having one too many Margaritas.

Will I be sore after the surgery?

If we’re honest, it would be quite naïve not to expect a little discomfort after any type of surgery and let’s face it, having dental implants is considered a relatively major procedure as far as your teeth are concerned. That said, any pain or discomfort experienced should be easily manageable.

So what can you expect?

Well, straight after your surgery and also for a few days, you’ll more than likely experience a little discomfort felt on the chin, cheeks or underneath your eyes, all depending on where exactly your implants are placed. It’s common to experience bruising of the skin (such as a black eye) pain where the implants have been inserted and minor bleeding too. We recommend taking over the counter painkillers such as Ibuprofen to help manage any discomfort you might feel.

After having dental implants, Manchester patients are encouraged to use an icepack (or any frozen veggie packs you’ve got on hand) to help reduce swelling. Maybe the worst part of implant surgery is that a soft diet is required for two weeks afterward… But hey…who doesn’t love jelly and ice cream?

We’ll also recommend that you rinse your mouth with warm salty water regularly to help soothe and cleanse the area. Lastly, if you experience any increased pain or swelling, give us a call immediately.
